DID YOU KNOW?
AWS is on purpose about involving every individual in each Day Services activity, whether they need a little help or a lot.

DAY SERVICES: MAKING THE MOST OF EACH DAY

At AWS, we believe that every person should be encouraged to be productive, inspired to learn and involved in his or her community. Through our Day Services program, we make this principle come to life through social, educational and skill building opportunities, as well as regular community participation — which includes volunteering and “giving back.”

Day Services participants enjoy exploring their communities by visiting parks, zoos, museums and other entertaining venues, as well as volunteering for community organizations in need. Though most services are community-based, all Day Services programs have a “home base” where clients learn skills such as cooking and money management and participate in activities such as sports, arts and hobbies.

Days filled with learning, fun, volunteering and more define AWS Day Services. See how AWS consumers spend their days.

The benefits of the program are profound. In addition to giving each person a more meaningful, well-rounded day, Day Services participants have made great strides in:

  • Improving physical abilities
  • Building social support
  • Increasing self-reliance
  • Enhancing self-esteem

Day Services is designed for individuals of all abilities levels. No matter the activity, participants enjoy meeting new people, making friendships and enjoying their community.

High standards, thorough training

Applicants for employment as an AWS Day Services Coordinator undergo a thorough interview and review process that includes a minimum of two interviews; background checks encompassing motor vehicle, criminal and violent behavior; blood testing for drug use; and contacting three past employers for references.

Once hired, the new AWS Day Services employee must pass several rigorous training exercises and tests that certify the employee understands and can apply the knowledge and skills. These include:

  • Seven-hour orientation
  • Medication Administration training
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid training
  • Certification in Positive Behavior Support known as Mandt or a Nonviolent approach from Crisis Prevention Intervention known as CPI
  • Comprehensive review of AWS policies, including abuse, neglect or exploitation
  • Specific training customized to clients’ medical, physical and social needs
  • “Shadow” a veteran AWS day-services employee
  • Complete and verify a Competency Training Checklist
  • All employees must be recertified annually in Medication Administration, Mandt /CPI, Polices and Procedures, CPR and First Aid, and the Individual’s support plan to ensure their skills and knowledge meet and/or surpass that required or an AWS Day Services employee
  • All staff receive annual performance reviews

Day Services is designed for individuals of all abilities levels. No matter the activity, participants enjoy meeting new people, making friendships and enjoying their community.
