Music Therapy
Music Therapy is fun. It improves quality of life and equips a person with skills for every day living. Unique among other therapies, music engages the whole person and stimulates all of the senses. Each musical element – rhythm, lyrics, melody – evokes responses that open new opportunities for understanding one’s self and one’s environment.
AWS employs board-certified music therapists that work one-on-one in the individual’s home or in a group or community setting. In Music Therapy, individuals with disabilities strum a guitar, sing a song, move to the music and even participate in a performance group regardless of ability.
Music Therapy uses vocal and instrumental music to build non-musical skills for growth and development such as:
- Communication
- Socialization
- Physical endurance
- Attention span
- Memory
- Emotional expression
- Fine and gross motor skills
- Relaxation
- Leadership
- Independence
