Disabilities Awareness

Teaching young children what it means to have a disability helps them understand that people with disabilities are really not that different. They may need a little extra help to do some things. The goal is to prevent children from developing barriers or biases toward people that are not like them.

 

We have designed a 45-minute Disabilities Awareness program for ages pre-school through second grade. Different disabilities are illustrated in a storybook that forms the basis for conversation. Students then participate in a series of activities that mimic a particular disability, followed by discussion of their experiences.
